Elizabeth's father was James Whitby and her mother was Isabella Dunn Maitland. Her maternal grandparents were Disney Leith Maitland and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Drummond. She had four brothers and a sister, named Thomas, William, Disney, Herbert and Margaret. She was the oldest of the six children. She died at the age of 55 on November 1st, 1956. She was buried in Stonehouse.
