Margaret's father was James Whitby and her mother was Isabella Dunn Maitland. Her maternal grandparents were Disney Leith Maitland and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Drummond. She had four brothers and a sister, named Thomas, William, Disney, Herbert and Elizabeth. She was the third youngest of the six children. She died at the age of 66 in 1974 in Bellshill.
