John was born on November 1st, 1747 in Dunfermline. John's father was William Shepherd and his mother was Margaret Tulloch.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Shepherd and Helen Donaldson; his maternal grandparents were Andrew Tillock and Helen Hadston. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Patrick, William, Andrew, James, Andrew, Janet, Margaret and Hellen.  He was the youngest of the nine children.
