William was born on August 27th, 1730 in Dunfermline. William's father was William Shepherd and his mother was Margaret Tulloch.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Shepherd and Helen Donaldson; his maternal grandparents were Andrew Tillock and Helen Hadston. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Patrick, Andrew, James, Andrew, John, Janet, Margaret and Hellen.  He was the second oldest of the nine children.
