Andrew was born on December 17th, 1732 in Dunfermline. Andrew's father was William Shepherd and his mother was Margaret Tulloch.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Shepherd and Helen Donaldson; his maternal grandparents were Andrew Tillock and Helen Hadston. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Patrick, William, James, Andrew, John, Janet, Margaret and Hellen.  He was the third oldest of the nine children.
