Edmund's father was Jonathan Robertson and his mother was Helen Tait. His paternal grandparents were James Robertson and Ann McMurran. He had five brothers and six sisters, named James, George, John, Hugh, Robert, Catherine, Margaret, Annie, Elizabeth, Mary and Susan. He was the youngest of the twelve children. He died at the age of 84 in 1981 in Perth.
