Hugh's father was William Muir and his mother was Mary McDonald. His maternal grandparents were Charles McDonald and Janet McNidder Robertson. He had six brothers and three sisters, named William, John, John, Charles, James, David, Mary, Janet and Lizzie. He was the second youngest of the ten children. He died at the age of 90 in 1980 in Ayr.
