David's father was William Muir and his mother was Mary McDonald. His maternal grandparents were Charles McDonald and Janet McNidder Robertson. He had six brothers and three sisters, named William, John, John, Charles, James, Hugh, Mary, Janet and Lizzie. He was the fifth youngest of the ten children. He died at the age of 74 in 1956 in Ayr.
