Robert's father was John Kerr and his mother was Eliza Scoular. His paternal grandparents were Alexander Kerr and Euphemia Robertson. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Alexander, John, Elizabeth, Euphemia and Agnes. He was the second oldest of the six children.
