Margaret's father was Hugh Borthwick and her mother was Margaret Brash.  Her maternal grandparents were David Brash and Margaret Easton. She had six brothers and two sisters, named George, James, John, Hugh, Robert, Ramsay, Isabel and Susan.  She was the youngest of the nine children.
