Susan's father was Hugh Borthwick and her mother was Margaret Brash.  Her maternal grandparents were David Brash and Margaret Easton. She had six brothers and two sisters, named George, James, John, Hugh, Robert, Ramsay, Isabel and Margaret.  She was the fifth oldest of the nine children.  She died at the age of 63 in 1861 in Leith.
