Margaret's father was James Bruce and his mother was Agnes Denovan. He had nine brothers and two sisters, named John, Margaret, Margaret, Archibald, James, William, Thomas, Andrew, Thomas, Isobell and Agnes.  He was the sixth youngest of the twelve children.  He died at the age of 80 in 1858 in Denny.
