Archibald's father was James Bruce and his mother was Agnes Denovan. He had nine brothers and two sisters, named John, Margaret, Margaret, James, William, Margaret, Thomas, Andrew, Thomas, Isobell and Agnes.  He was the fourth oldest of the twelve children.
