William was born in 1860 in Marske-by-Sea, North Yorkshire, England.  William's father was Thomas FORREST and his mother was Sarah HOLIDAY.  His paternal grandparents were David FORREST and Elizabeth MILLER. He had six brothers and three sisters, named John, Thomas, Wilson, Robert, Joseph, James, Hannah, Emily and Mary.  He was the third oldest of the ten children.
