James was born in 1878 in Skinningrove, North Yorkshire England.  James' father was Thomas FORREST and his mother was Sarah HOLIDAY.  His paternal grandparents were David FORREST and Elizabeth MILLER. He had six brothers and three sisters, named William, John, Thomas, Wilson, Robert, Joseph, Hannah, Emily and Mary.  He was the nineth oldest of the ten children.
