Mary was born on November 7th, 1827 in Whitby, North Yorkshire, England and her baptism took place there on November 12th, 1827.1   Mary's father was James COWIN (COWEY) and her mother was Eleanor WILKINSON.  Her paternal grandparents were Edward COWEN (COWEY) and Mary ARMSTRONG. She had a brother and two sisters, named William, Mary and Elizabeth.  She was the youngest of the four children.
