Emma's father was Benjamin Goad and her mother was Anne Elizabeth Hill. Her paternal grandparents were William Goad and Darling Thomas; her maternal grandparents were Lt Col Sir Robert Chambre Hill and Eliza Lumley. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, Charles, George, Goad and Henrietta. She died at the age of 78 in 1908.
