Mary was born in 1825. Mary's father was John Potter and her mother was Ann Calaby.  Her paternal grandparents were Willm. Potter and Alice Thacker; her maternal grandparents were John Callaby and Ann Holmes. She had three brothers and five sisters, named Thomas, Charles, Francis, Alice, Elizabeth, Jane, Ann and Susan.  She was the oldest of the nine children.
