Ann was born in 1838 in Holme next the sea.1  Ann's father was John Potter and her mother was Ann Calaby.  Her paternal grandparents were Willm. Potter and Alice Thacker; her maternal grandparents were John Callaby and Ann Holmes. She had three brothers and five sisters, named Thomas, Charles, Francis, Mary, Alice, Elizabeth, Jane and Susan.  She was the third youngest of the nine children.
