Isak was born on July 9th, 1852 in Tulbagh.¹ Isak's father was Dirk Jacobus Winterbach and his mother was Hester Francina Elizabetha Verster. His paternal grandparents were Johannes Carel Winterbach and Dorethea Elizabetha Theron. He had seven brothers and four sisters, named Johan, Dirk, Koos, Hendrik, Piet, Tobias, Louis, Susanna, Dorothea, Johanna and Hester. He died at the age of 69 on January 21st, 1922 in Tulbagh. He was buried in Oude Kerk Volksmuseum Cemetery, Tulbagh, Western Cape..²³
