Martha Catharina was born in 1777 in Drakenstein, South Africa.  Martha Catharina's father was Hendrik Anthonie van Vollenhoven and her mother was Martha Susanna du Toit. She had seven brothers and three sisters, named Cornelis Adolph, Andries, Ernst Johannes, Helmoet Hardwieg, Hendrick Bernadus, Lucas Christiaan, Andries Jacobus, Alida Maria, Hermina Susanna and Jacoba Claudina.  She was the third youngest of the eleven children.
