Andries Jacobus was born in 1780 in Drakenstein, South Africa.  Andries Jacobus' father was Hendrik Anthonie van Vollenhoven and his mother was Martha Susanna du Toit. He had six brothers and four sisters, named Cornelis Adolph, Andries, Ernst Johannes, Helmoet Hardwieg, Hendrick Bernadus, Lucas Christiaan, Alida Maria, Hermina Susanna, Martha Catharina and Jacoba Claudina.  He was the second youngest of the eleven children.
