Lucas Christiaan was born in 1775 in Drakenstein, South Africa.  Lucas Christiaan's father was Hendrik Anthonie van Vollenhoven and his mother was Martha Susanna du Toit. He had six brothers and four sisters, named Cornelis Adolph, Andries, Ernst Johannes, Helmoet Hardwieg, Hendrick Bernadus, Andries Jacobus, Alida Maria, Hermina Susanna, Martha Catharina and Jacoba Claudina.  He was the fourth youngest of the eleven children.
