Hendrick Bernadus was born in 1773 in Drakenstein, South Africa.  Hendrick Bernadus' father was Hendrik Anthonie van Vollenhoven and his mother was Martha Susanna du Toit. He had six brothers and four sisters, named Cornelis Adolph, Andries, Ernst Johannes, Helmoet Hardwieg, Lucas Christiaan, Andries Jacobus, Alida Maria, Hermina Susanna, Martha Catharina and Jacoba Claudina.  He was the fifth youngest of the eleven children.
