Gilbert was born in 1658 in Kirkcalla, Wigtownshire, , Scotland.  Gilbert's father was Patrick Milroy and his mother was Janet Miekleurick.  His paternal grandparents were John Milroy and Ada. He had six brothers named James, William, John, Thomas, Martin and Patrick.  He was the third oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 52 in 1710 in Kirkcowan, Wigtownshire, , Scotland.
