Robert was born on February 1st, 1827 in Galston, Ayr, Scotland. Robert's father was Robert Scoular and his mother was Helen Donald. His paternal grandparents were Robert Scoular and Annabella Lauchlan; his maternal grandparents are Thomas Donald and Janet Brown. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Thomas James, George, Mathew, James Donald, Janet, Anabella and Helen. He is the oldest of the eight children.-
