John I was born about 1212 in Bywell, Hexham, Northumberland, England.  John I's father was Hugh of Barnard Castle and his mother was Cecily de la Fontaine.  His paternal grandparents were Eustace de Baliol and Petronella FitzPiers; his maternal grandparents were Aleaume de la Fontaine and Laurette Saint Walery. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Eustace, Bernard, Ada and Jocelin.  He was the second youngest of the five children.  He died before November 24th, 1268 in Barnard Castle, Gainford, Durham, England.  He was buried in Sweetheart Abbey, Dumfriesshire, Scotland.


John I's family with Devorgilla Galloway

‌John I and Devorgilla were married in a religious ceremony in 1233 in Galloway, Scotland.  They had five sons and six daughters, named Hugh, Alexander, Alan, William, John II, Cecily, Eleanor (Alianora), Mary, Euphemia, Margaret and Ada.
