Succeeded his uncle Guy de Bailliol in his English and French fees. Ancestor of the historic house of Balliol. [Falaise Roll, p. 253]

Transformed the small fortification at Barnard into a great stone fortress with its own borough, and it is not surprising, therefore, that the castle and town now bear his name rather than his Uncle Guy's name. The undoubted model for this twin creation was the borough and castle of Richmond in into existence by Alan, Count of Brittany nearly 60 years before. [Barnard Castle, p. 4]

The 12th century castle was founded by Bernard Baliol, and Bernard's Castle gave its name to the town that grew up beside it. The castle was later seized by one of Durham's Prince Bishops, and other owners included Richard III. [Barnard Castle flyer]

Barnard Castle overlooks the Tees. Beginning as a small fortified enclosure of the late 11th or early 12th century, and belonging to the Baliol family, it developed into a 6-1/2 acre oblong enclosure (13th & 14th centuries). [Castles of Britain and Ireland, p. 122-123]
