Black and Mary Griggs; her maternal grandparents were Nathan Pinckney Jordan Jr. and Mary Motes. She had two brothers and three sisters, and also a sibling of unknown gender, named Joseph Lee, Charlie, Ninnie Rebecca, Maggie B., Emma and M. F.. She is the oldest of the seven children.-
