James was born in 1781. James' father was William Given and his mother was Nancy Agnes Bratton. His paternal grandfather was Major John Given and his paternal grandmother is Mary Margaret Sitlington; his maternal grandparents were Robert Bratton and Ann McFarland. He had seven brothers and seven sisters, named Robert, William, Samuel, Adam, John, George, Henry, Sarah "Sally" Hannah, Janet "Ginny", Mary, Isabella, Anne, Margaret "Peggy" and Agnes. He is the seventh youngest of the fifteen children.-
