George W. was born about 1825. George W.'s father was Peter Shaffer and his mother was Mary George. His paternal grandparents were Christopher Shaffer and UNKNOWN Elizabeth; his maternal grandparents were Thomas George and Catherine McCoy. He had three brothers and six sisters, named Joseph Allen, William, Thomas, Elisabeth, Mary, Rebecca, Sarah, Lucy and Francis. He was the second oldest of the ten children.
