Samuel Ely Shafer 
Samuel Ely was born on September 24th, 1868 in Rupert, Greenbrier County, West Virginia. Samuel Ely's father was George Washington Shaver and his mother was Lucinda Judy. His paternal grandparents were George E. Shaver and Isabelle Rodgers; his maternal grandparents were William Judy and Sara Walkup. He had four brothers and six sisters, named William Alexander, Daniel Washington, George Edward, Gilbert Christopher, Sarah Isabella, Mary Catherine, Margaret Elizabeth, Esta Jane, Rebecca J. and Rachel. He was the fifth oldest of the eleven children. He died at the age of 72 on December 27th, 1940.-
