Bessie Jessie Hollenbeck 
Bessie Jessie was born on February 4th, 1905 in Tacoma, Washington.1 Bessie Jessie's father was Anthony J. Hollenbeck and her mother was Bessie Church Brooks. Her paternal grandparents are Anthony Hollenbeck and Mary Briney; her maternal grandparents were William S. Brooks and Hadessa Means. She had five brothers and three sisters, named James, Joseph, Anthony, William J., Lee L., Daisy Means, Daughter and Daughter. She was the second youngest of the nine children. She died at the age of 93 on June 16th, 1998 in Centralia, Washington.1 General Notes

Bessie Jessie Hollenbeck liked to use the old spelling "Hallenbeck" du
ri ng her life. She went by the name of Betty Jane Hallenbeck Royal ins
te ad of her birth name. The birth date may be slightly incorrect as Bet
ty J ane (Bessie) refused to tell her correct age. According to the 19
20 cens us she was 14 years old and was boarding with a family in Homedal
e, Idah o. Realistically, she was born in 1905.
Bessie went to live with her sister, Daisy, after the death of their mo
th er in 1911. It wasn't the easiest of situations because her brother-in
-la w, Sammy Sutter, made her feel like a burden and they moved frequentl
y: A lberta Saskatchewan, WA, OR, AZ, MT, ID. She said she only spent o
ne fu ll year in one school in her entire life. In 1922 Bessie's siste
r, Dais y, died after surgery. Being a junior in high school, Bessie drop
ped ou t, borrowed money from her brother-in-law, Sammy, and moved in wi
th his da ughter in Seattle where she enrolled in business college. She o
btain ed a well paying job after graduation and became the highest paid se
creta ry in Seattle before the Depression. She also finished high scho
ol by att ending night classes. Although the company Bessie worked for we
nt unde r, her boss kept her on as the only employee for as long as he cou
ld. A m onth later, she was offed employment elsewhere, but decided to g
et marri ed instead. Bessie had a beautiful singing voice, could draw ext
remely we ll, and was a very talented seamstress. A great storyteller wi
th a wonder ful sense of humor, she kept her husband, Loyd, going. In lat
er years s he developed macular degeneration in both eyes and senile demen
tia.
