Entered college at the age of 15 and obtained his BS in fisheries at t
he U niversity of Washington. Obtained employment as a carpenter with t
he Depa rtment of Fisheries for the State of Washington. Joined the U.
S. Navy a nd served as lieutenant in WWII. After the war he returned to D
epartme nt of Fisheries where he became assistant director. In 1949, he t
ook t he job of Chief Biologist for the International Pacific Salmon Fishe
ries C ommission in New Westminister British Columbia, Canada, and a ye
ar later b ecame Assistant Director. Approximately one year later he w
as named Direc tor where he remained until his retirement in 1971. Befo
re his retireme nt the University of British Columbia gave him an honora
ry doctorate for h is contributions to international relations. After t
he Canadian employmen t, Loyd worked as a fisheries consultant for the Sta
te of Washington for a pprox. one year before retiring completely. A ye
ar later Loyd suffer ed a stroke and was partially paralyzed. Althou
gh he could no longer hu nt and fish he still managed to do his gardeni
ng and drive. In his last f ew years he was bedridden due to complicatio
ns of diabetes.
