His father John Basham, was born near Gepharts, Scio to Coun ty. His grandfather, Anderson Basham, came to Gepharts from the sa lt regio ns of West Virginia near Charleston. His mother was Mary Moore da ught er of William Moore who lived in Sciotoville, Ohio. Our subject rece iv ed a common school education. He attended school three months in t he ye ar from the time he was ten years until he was thirteen and set on t he o ld style benches made of slab with legs to it. He has been a member of the Board of Education of Clay township for t he l ast twenty years with the exception of three years, and secured the c onstr uction of what is known as the Star yard school house. He has nev er be en in politics and has never held office, but is a "dyed in the woo l" demo crat. He is not a member of any church. He was married December 1 6, 186 2, to Nancy Rowley. Five children were born to them, all boys. fo ur of th em died before reaching the age of five and one is now living; Th omas Edga r, born May 20, 1868.
