Sarah Ann Bassham 
Sarah Ann was born on May 15th, 1832 in Jackson Co., Tennessee.1 Sarah Ann's father was Meredith A. Bassham and her mother was Elizabeth Ann Fox. Her paternal grandparents were Uriah Basham and Rhoda Simmons. She had four brothers and four sisters, named Parilee J., William D., Benjamin U., John B R, Parizetta F., Rhoda Lee, Cynthia A. T. and Elvira Elizabeth. She was the third oldest of the nine children. She died at the age of 77 on June 8th, 1909 in Greenfield, Greene Co., Illinois.1 General Notes

Sarah Ann BASHAM Chaffin was born in Jackson County, Tennessee, the dau
gh ter of Meredith A. Bassham and Elizazeth A. Box. She married John K. Ch
aff in. They came to Illinois in a covered wagon drawn by oxen in 1858. Se
ttl ed near Jerseyville, Jersey County Illinois (4 miles from Jerseyville
). Jo hn K. died one year later.
Sarah, left with three little girls to care for, started a boarding h
ou se and later taught school. She moved to Greenfield, Illinois arou
nd 18 58 or 1859. Later she ran a millinery shop on north side of Patters
on Groc ery Store in Hettick, Macoupin County, Illinois. Also kept boarde
rs whi le in Hettick. She died at her home in Hettick on the northeast co
rn er of the square. Children: Elmyra E., Rhoda Jane, John K. Jr., Cynth
