Benjamin remained under the parental roof until April, 1865 when he mar
ri ed Louisa V. McBride of Greene County. After his marriage, he farmed s
ix y ears on the McBride property, of which he had a lease. Nov 12, 18
64 he mov ed to Greenfield, where his wife died March 11, 1874. After comi
ng to to wn was engaged in teaming, which business not being satisfactor
y, abandon ed it and bought out the livery stable owned by Joseph Cart
er on Nov 12, 1 874. Two years later he built the hotel building he now oc
cupies, and h as since been running it in connection with his livery. Marr
ied Elizabe th J. Crauch in 1841 with no issue.

ed at ho me of his son, J. H. Bassham, in this city May 26, 1915, followi
ng an illn ess of about 2 weeks. Age 73 years, 6 mos, 22 days. Deceased w
as bo rn in Jackson County, Tennessee November 4, 1841 being the son of Me
redi th A. and Elizabeth Fox Bassham. Came with parents to Illinois in 185
2, fi rst settled in Madison County where they lived for 2 years. They mov
ed fr om there to Jersey County where they remained 10 years and then
ce to Macou pin County they farmed for about 8 years. Out of a family of n
ine childre n, Elvira, the wife of Thomas Maxwell of Palmyra is the only o
ne that surv ives.
Mr. Bassham remained with his parents until April, 1865 when he marri
ed M iss Louisa V McBride. Of this union four children were born thr
ee of wh om still survive and are resident of Greenfield: John H., Mrs. E
va Stoc k, and Mrs. Laura Stubblefied. His wife died in March 1873 a
nd he remov ed with his children to Greenfield during October of the sa
me year whe re he has ever since resided.
He was twice married, his second wife being Elizabeth J. Chinoweth. S
he d ied February 1914. Maiden name - Bauer). After coming to Greenfie
ld he fol lowed teaming for a year then bought out the livery stable of Jo
seph Carte r. In 1875 he erected the hotel building, two blocks west of t
he square, a nd has been engaged in conducting the same the greater pa
rt of the time ev er since. Funeral conducted in his home, THE BASSHAM HOT
