Her paternal grandparents were Henry Dowell Basham and Cassandra Hardin. She had seven brothers and three sisters, named Earl Wallace, Oral Peyton, Charles Henry (Twin), Ceil Duncan, Ermine (Twin), Erwin (Twin), Nathaniel Reid, Martha Lou (Mattie), Cleona Blanche and Judith Ellen (Nel).
