His paternal grandparents were John C. Basham and Parthena Unknown. He had six brothers and three sisters, named John M., Greene Berry, Leroy J. (Tony), Henry Baskam, William Pleasant, Charles W., Female Child, Cinthia J and Sarah Ann B.. He was the fifth youngest of the ten children.
