Mary Catherine Allen 
Mary Catherine was born on June 2nd, 1878 in Hutto, Williamson Co., Texas.1 Mary Catherine's father was William Barrett Travis Allen and her mother was Mary Elizabeth Snider. Her paternal grandparents were James Bud Allen and Nancy McNutt; her maternal grandparents were John Snider and Rachel Smalley. She had three brothers and five sisters, named Bud, Travis Bud, Martin Travis, Ida A., Martha Barbara, Rachel, Rosalie and Prudie. She was the fourth youngest of the nine children. She died at the age of 70 on February 25th, 1949 in Muleshoe, Bailey Co., Texas. She was buried in Rogers, Bell Co., Texas.1 1 General Notes

They were a social people these old Three Hundred, though no one s
ee ms to have noted the evidence of it. There were a number of weddings a
nd o ther social gatherings during my sojourn in that section, the most no
tab le one perhaps being the marriage of Nicholas McNutt to Miss Cartwrigh
t. T here was a large number of invited guests, both the families occupyi
ng pro minent social positions. Jesse Cartwright, father of the bride, w
as a m an in comfortable circumstances and himself and family people of go
od bree ding. They were among the very first of Austin's colonists, Cartwr
ight bei ng a member of the first Ayuntamiento organized in Texas. The bri
degroom w as a son of the widow McNutt, also among the early arrivals. T
he family, c onsisting of mother, two sons and three young daughters, ca
me from Louisia na, where they had been very wealthy, but having suffer
ed reverses they ca me to Texas to recoup their fortunes. Bred up in luxur
y, as they evident ly had been, it was a rough road to fortune they chos
e, but they adapted t hemselves to the situation and made the best of i
t. Mrs. McNutt had thr ee brothers, the Welches, living on Bayou Rapids, L
a., whom I afterwards k new; she also had a sister, Mrs. Dr. Peebles livi
ng with her husband in S an Felipe. Dr. Wells later married a Miss McNut
t, and Porter another. B ut to get back to the wedding. Miss Mary Allen, d
aughter of Martin Alle n, a very pretty girl and a great belle by the wa
y, was bridesmaid, and Jo hn McNutt, brother of the bridegroom, was grooms
man. There being no prie st in the vicinity, Thomas Dukes, the "big" alcal
de, was summoned from S an Felipe. The alcalde tied the nuptial knot in go
od American style, but t he contracting parties had in addition to si
gn a bond to avail themselv es of the priest's services to legalize the ma
rriage at the earliest oppor tunity.
Among the guests present I remember Mrs. Long and her daughter Ann, Mi
ss A lcorn, daughter of Elijah Alcorn, Miss Mary, daughter of Moses Shipma
n, Mr s. McNutt and daughters, none of the latter then grown, Capt. Marti
n, Elli ot and John Alcorn.
