James D. was born in 1827 in Claiborne, Louisana.1 James D.'s father was John Calhoun Allen and his mother was Mary Ann Holcombe. His paternal grandfather was Hiram Allen and his paternal grandmother is Mary Ann Susanna Unknown. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Hiram George, John Birchfield, Harmon Holcombe, George Washington, Thomas Price, Mary Ann Elizabeth, Cassandra Ann and Martha.
