Her paternal grandparents are Johannes Winkler and Margarethe Rebscher; her maternal grandparents are Jacob Winkler and Anna Johanna Herbel. She had two brothers and six sisters, named Peter, Charles, Catharina, Elisabetha, Katharine, Elizabeth, Sophia and Rose. She was the third oldest of the nine children.
