Graveside funeral services for Marie Louise Burling Smith, age 80, of Sulphur Springs, were held Sunday, April 18, at Elm Grove Cemetery in Alpine.

Mrs. Smith died Wednesday, April 14, at Carriage House Manor Nursing Home in Sulphur Springs.

Marie Smith was born May 11, 1924, in Alpine, the daughter of Charles Fredrick and Jane Louise Ross Burling., who preceded her in death in 1986.

Marie Smith was a loving wife, mother and homemaker. In her working years, she was a telephone operator, and with her husband Milton managed the Black Mesa Ranch outside of Alpine for more than 11 years.

Mrs. Smith is survived by sons, Milton R. Smith, Jr., and wife Dorothy of Bethany, W.V. and Forrest Ray Smith of Alpine; daughter, Treva Watson and husband James of Sulphur Springs; brothers, Jerry Burling of Amarillo, James Burling of Las Cruces and William Burling of Waco; sisters, Jean Burling Martin of Albuquerque; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Robert Smith; three brothers, Edward Burling, Charles Burling and John B. Burling; as well as three sisters, Marge McKenna, Dorothy French and Barbara Causey.

Tapp Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers or other memorials, the family would prefer gifts in Mrs. Smith's name to Alpine Public Library.

Hi, This is Dawn Burgess, Marie's granddaughter, Milton Jr.'s daughter. I have more information that I can fill in for Marie.
Her siblings are, in order of age, Margaret, Charles F. Jr., John B. (J.B.), Dorothy, James Vernon, (Marie, middle child of 11), William (Billie), Jean, Edward, Gerald, and Barbara. I don't have all their birth dates, just approximations, but I do have a photo I could email you of Charles Sr., his wife Jane Louise Ross Burling, and all eleven kids lined up in order. Pretty cool picture; let me know if you want me to send it on. I have her father Charles's parents as William J. Buerling and Elizabeth Uhr, with birth dates, but nothing further for them. I have her mother Jane Louise Ross's parents as John Benjamin Ross (1849-1918) and Jennie Linn ("Jennylind" on her tombstone) Downs Ross (1851-1932), both buried in Cedar Grove Cemetery in Sanderson, TX.

Marie's husband, Milton Rudolph Smith (Sr.) was born 2 June 1918 in Del Rio, Val Verde county, TX. He died 23 May, 1987 in Alpine, Brewster county, TX, and is buried next to Marie in the same cemetery. His parents were James M. Smith, born in Del Rio, TX (date unknown), and Lilly Pearl Stone, also born in Del Rio. I've hit a brick wall with that line, can't find any info on either of them.

Marie's son Robert drowned at the age of 6.

Milton Jr.'s wife's maiden name is Dorothy Hocker (no middle name), daughter of Walter Hayes Hocker and Pansy Iola Parks Hocker, and she was born in Corpus Christi on 4/4/43.

Their children are Milton Rudolph Smith III (b. in Alpine 2/2/64) and Dawn Irene Smith Burgess (Hi!) born in Bryan, Brazos county, TX, 5/18/67.

If you want any further information, I may be able to get birth dates for some of the Burling kids, but it would just be word of mouth from my dad.
