His paternal grandparents were William J. Buerling and Elizabeth Uhr; his maternal grandparents were John B. Ross and Jenny Lind BATES OR DOWNS. He had five brothers and five sisters, named Charles Fredrick, John Benjamin, James Vernon, Edward, Jerry, Margaret Virginia, Dorothy M., Marie Louise, Audry Jean and Barbara.
