William was born about 1190.1 William's father was Margaret MARSHAL and his mother was Isabel DE CLARE. His paternal grandparents were John MARSHAL and Sybil FITZ PATRICK; his maternal grandparents were Richard DE CLARE and Aoife/Eva MACMURROUGH. He had seven brothers and eight sisters, named William II, Richard, Gilbert, Walter, Anselm, Anselm/Ambrose, Gilbert III, Margaret, Maud, Eve, Isabel, Joan, Sibyl, Sybil and Eva.
