Charles was born about 0942 in Laon, Champagne, France.  Charles' father was Louis IV "d'Outremer" and his mother was Gerberga von Saxony.  His paternal grandparents were III Charles and Ogive Eadgina of England; his maternal grandparents were Heinrich I "the Fowler" and Matilda von Ringelheim. He had four brothers and three sisters, named King of France, Prince of France, Prince of France, Prince of France, Princess of France, Princess of France and Princess of France.  He was the second oldest of the eight children. He had a half-brother and three half-sisters, named Henri, Alberade, Gerberga and Duchess of Bavaria.  He died in Kerker, Orlaeans, France; captivity; imprisoned by Hugh Capet.  He was buried in St. Servatius, Maastricht.

They had three sons and two daughters, named Charles, Orthon of lower, Eudes of Lower, Duchess of Brabant and Adelheid.
