Joan was born in 1238 in Ferrers, Derby, England.  Joan's father was William de Ferrers and her mother was Sibyl Mareschal.  Her paternal grandparents were William de Ferrers and Agnes de Meschines; her maternal grandparents were William Mareschal and Isabel FitzGilbert de Clare. She had five sisters named Isabel, Sibyl, Maud, Agatha and Eleanor.  She was the youngest of the six children. She had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named Sir William, Robert and Agnes.  She died at the age of 29 in October 1267 in Berkeley, Gloucester, England.  She was buried in Monastery of St. Augustine, Gloucester, England.

They had a son and two daughters, named Sir Maurice III, Alice and Margaret.

They had a son named John.
