Gilbert was born in 1183 in Hertford, Hertfordshire, England.  Gilbert's father was Richard de Clare VI Earl of Hertford and his mother was Amice FitzRobert Countess.  His paternal grandparents were Roger de Clare Earl of Gloucester and Countess Maud de St. Hilary de Harcourt; his maternal grandparents were William FitzRobert Earl of Gloucester and Hawise de Beaumont. He had a brother and three sisters, named Richard, Aveline, Maud and Joan.  He was the second youngest of the five children.  He died at the age of 47 on October 25th, 1230 in Perres-Guirrec, Brittany, France.  He was buried on November 10th, 1230 in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, England.
