Aveline was born in 1170 in Clare, Suffolk, England.  Aveline's father was Richard de Clare VI Earl of Hertford and her mother was Amice FitzRobert Countess.  Her paternal grandparents were Roger de Clare Earl of Gloucester and Countess Maud de St. Hilary de Harcourt; her maternal grandparents were William FitzRobert Earl of Gloucester and Hawise de Beaumont. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Gilbert, Richard, Maud and Joan.  She was the oldest of the five children.  She died about June 4th, 1225.
