His paternal grandparents were Duke Hugues of France (The Great) and Hedwig of Sachsen; his maternal grandparents were Duke Guillaume III of Aquitaine and Gerlotte or Adele of Normandy. He had two sisters named Hedwig of France and Adele of France. He was the oldest of the three children. He died at the age of 59 on July 20th, 1031 in Meulan, France.
